Abstract
Immunoassays of psychoactive drugs including psychotomimetic
drugs, narcotic drugs, and tetrahydrocannabinols and treatment
methods based on the antigenic properties of protein conjugates of
these drugs. These methods are based upon treating the psychoactive
substances as haptens and utilizing their protein conjugates to
produce antibodies to the psychoactive materials themselves. The
immunoassay methods include both agglutination and
agglutination-inhibition reactions. The treatment methods include
treatment of both exogenous, administered drugs (such as cannabinols,
LSD, heroin and morphine) and endogenous substances (such as
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine and 5-Methoxy-N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, by
active immunization and also passive immunization.
Claims
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed
and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A method of treating schizophrenia in a human, said method
comprising administering to said human an antibody to a species
which is etiological to schizophrenia.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein said species is a psychoactive
indoleamine.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein said antibody comprises in vitro
prepared fragments of an antibody produced in vivo in a suitable
animal.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein said species is an enzyme.
5. The method of claim 4 wherein said enzyme catalyzes a reaction in
the metabolism of a psychoactive indoleamine.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein said antibody comprises at least
one immunologically active part of a complete antibody.
7. A method of treating a mental illness in a human, the etiology of
said mental illness comprising endogenous production of a
psychoactive hapten, said method comprising administering to said
human an antibody to said hapten or to an enzyme which catalyzes a
reaction in the metabolism of the hapten.
8. The method of claim 7 wherein said antibody comprises at least
one immunologically active part of a complete antibody.
